U-18 Provincial Playdowns

March 13-18

U-18 Provincial Playdowns

The Salmon Arm Curling Centre is hosting the Optimist U18 Provincial Curling Championships March 13-18, 2018.  This event will showcase the talents of British Columbia’s curling youth (boys and girls) as well as the generous hospitable nature of Salmon Arm, club members, volunteers and sponsors.  Above is the event poster WITH our EVENT slogan: REACH FOR THE STARS.

Curl BC is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of curling in BC, in cooperation with its membership of 24,000.  Curl BC is also responsible for the provincial championship system that declares provincial representation at national events.

Curl BC community promotes, develops and supports curling throughout BC.  Their vision is to promote curling as an integral part of the lifestyle, culture and heritage of BC. Curl BC’s family is a community of individuals that acts like a family that is connected and passionate about the sport of curling.

The event:

The Optimist U18 Provincial Curling Championships (18 years and under) is a separate event from the Provincial Junior Curling Championships (21 years and under) and was created to provide an opportunity for younger curlers to build teams and develop skills outside regular league curling within a competitive structure.  The winning boy’s and girl’s teams from our event will represent BC at the Canadian Nationals in Saint Andrews, New Brunswick with all 14 of Curling Canada’s member associations present.

Teams from across the province have been competing in regional play downs to win a spot in this event.  There will be 16 teams competing: 8 boys’ teams and 8 girls’ teams.  There are usually 5 team members (4 curlers and coach) though some teams will bring a 5th player as a spare. Many teams will arrive with an entourage of parents and family members as well.  The championships commence on March 12 with a team meeting and a welcome banquet at the Salmon Arm Curling Centre.  The competition is a round robin event with Opening Ceremonies and play commencing March 13 and Closing Ceremonies Sunday, March 18 following the Finals.

Events such as this aid in the development of our youth and support the sustainability of curling as an important aspect of Canadian culture.

Curling Champions that are and have curled at the Salmon Arm Curling Club:

Many of you are know the following individuals in the club and some of you curl with or against the individuals in league play:  Sandra Jenkins ( Year needed Olympics), Kate Horne (Year needed Worlds), Hugh Bennett (year needed World Juniors) and Gord Duplisse (Year needed Provincial ???)

In 2009, Salmon Arm hosted young developing junior teams led by Rachel Homan, Kaitlyn Lawes, Casey Scheidegger and Brent Gallant.  These young players have gone on to become high profile adult curlers three of whom will be representing Canada at the 2018 Olympics!
