Way to go members of the Salmon Arm Curling Club!
There were so many club volunteers led by President Donna Shultz (who also curled in this). Catherine Furevick, Brenda Paiement, Lynn McKenzie and Barb Smith warmly welcomed curlers at the Accreditation Desk. We had Rosie Morris and Peter Barton thankfully not applying their medical skills, David Walker and Brenda McClellan officiating, recording LSD (last stone draw) points, wins/losses and determining teams who would play for Bronze, Silver and Gold. Steve Moss and Stewart Ross were invaluable as were so many others . . . even bartender Sharon Kinnaird stayed to help after her shift because the bar was hopping. Our kitchen was extremely popular with curlers and spectators alike – “we luvs ya Sue!”
This group photo shows all Gold/Silver medalists only (unfortunately the Bronze medalists were awarded earlier in the day to enable teams to travel home). By the way, these athletes are showing that while they play to win, “Seniors just wanna have fun”♪ You can find lots of photos on the Games Flickr site as well (click on the link here).
Of note, Larry Stephenson, Kate Horne, Doug Buchanan and Jane Stephenson came out firing in the 65 plus Mixed finals and took the Gold. Both Team Stephenson and Team Mertens (55 plus Mixed) of Salmon Arm finished their round robins in first place but Team Mertens’ unblemished record was spoiled by the Wright team from Kelowna in the final. Wayne Mertens, Jen Udy, Lonnie Karpick and Shelley LaRocque brought home the silver.
Other Salmon Arm teams drawing a crowd were:
- Gord Duplisse, Eric Brietkreuz, Dennis Robertson, John Howard (Men’s 65 Plus)
- Nicole Reich, Diane Trundle, Donna Shultz, Debbie Moss (Women’s 65 Plus)
- Al Probyn who played with a Zone 6 – 55 Plus Men’s team at the tender age of 82!
Well done everyone!
