And well done Vernon!
With just under 1,300 athletes in attendance, curling was held at the Vernon Curling Club – just one of 15 sports from Archery to Wheelchair Basketball hosted by the Greater Vernon area.
Thompson Okanagan zone 2 were given 2 berths into both the girls and boys curling events when one of the 8 eligible zones couldn’t field a team. BOTH the girls and boys gold medal games featured Zone 2 teams pitted against each other. Three with undefeated records from their pools (Beck, Jaeger, Arndt)! Team Beck faced Team Jaeger from Kelowna with Team Arndt (Vernon, Kamloops) facing Team Rempel (Kelowna) in girls play.
In the Gold medal game, Team Beck took 3 in the 4th end and broke open a tightly contested game with a steal of 2 in the 5th.
Girls play saw Team Rempel opting to throw their rock away in the 8th end which meant an extra end and they shook hands when Megan Rempel’s last stone in the extra end came short on a draw attempt.
Great memories of a lifetime for the teams: Teams Beck and Jaeger sharing a school classroom for sleeping accommodation, pillow fights, trying to get comfy on floor mats in their sleeping bags, screaming in freezing cold showers, bus transport to schools or breakfast/supper at the Vernon Recreation Centre, large bag lunches, fun night-time events with all sports gathered together.
